Legal Issues for Graphic Artists
by Ryan McKay, Western Regional Rep
On Wednesday February 1, 2017, I attended an exciting workshop hosted by the Graphic Artists Guild and California Lawyers for the Arts. Led by Greg Victoroff, esq., the presentation covered important legal topics in the creative industry.
The format allowed the audience of designers and lawyers to view example slides then give their opinions of infringement, fair use and how copyrights are compared in different examples.
Mr. Victoroff went into detail comparing examples of piracy and fair use. He left us with a set of guidelines to help decide whether an artist is infringing or displaying fair use.
We discussed design contracts, work for hire contracts and what to remember when collecting money from clients.
I concluded the evening talking about the Guild’s online resources, how the Pricing and Ethical Guidelines Handbook is a necessary tool in the creative industry and the importance of utilizing organizations like the Graphic Artists Guild when determining pricing and project contracts.
Many thanks to California Lawyers for the Arts and the beautiful Edward Cela Art Gallery.
